8 Recipes for Cleaning with Lavender

Just like a lot of you out there, cleaning the house isn’t my favorite activity. I have found, though, that when the cleaning process is combined with the beauty of aromatherapy, it can truly be enjoyable & satisfying.

Lavender is a gem when it comes to natural, non-toxic cleaning. The word lavender is actually derived from the Latin lavare, which means to wash (who knew?!)It is a known disinfectant and deodorizer, and leaves behind a gorgeous, calming scent that instantly relaxes the mind, lifting you up and away.

See below for 8 ways you can use Lavender Essential Oil to clean your home.

Fabric Softener

  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Add this mixture to the fabric softener compartment of your washer and fall in love with the soft, beautifully-scented clothing that emerges.

Bathroom Cleaner

  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • 1/4 cup fresh Lemon Juice or 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • 1/2 cup Distilled White Vinegar
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Mix all ingredients together to make a paste. Use this paste to scrub the tub, the sink, the toilet – even tile floors. After scrubbing, rinse with water and dry with a fresh rag.

Carpet Freshener

  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Blend the Lavender Essential Oil with the Baking Soda and sprinkle on your carpets. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes and vacuum up.

Glass Spray

  • 1 cup Distilled White Vinegar
  • 1 cup Distilled Water
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Combine these ingredients in a spray bottle and use as you would any window/glass cleaner. I normally have to look away when using a glass spray so I don’t inhale the ingredients but this recipe is amazing – if I happen to get a whiff, I can just revel in the relaxation it brings.

Surface Cleaner

  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Distilled White Vinegar
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Add the water & vinegar to a 12 oz. glass spray bottle and then drop in the essential oils. Shake well before each use & use to clean just about every surface in your house. I use this daily in my bathroom, kitchen, and on my yoga mat.

Lavender Sachet

  • Dried Lavender
  • Fabric Pouch or Square of Fabric
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Whenever I receive a fabric pouch with a piece of jewelry, I’m sure to save it. Not only are they great for traveling, but they make a perfect sachet when paired with fragrant lavender.

To make the sachet, add about 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil to your Dried Lavender then spoon a bit of the Dried Lavender into the pouch and tie the end shut. Or, add a bit of Lavender to the center of a square of natural-fiber fabric and seal with a bit of thread or ribbon. Put your sachet in your dresser drawers to make your clothes smell amazing.

Replace the lavender & essential oil every few weeks.

Linen Spray

  • 30 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • Organic Witch Hazel
  • Distilled Water

In a 12 oz. spray bottle, combine equal parts Witch Hazel (which helps the lavender aroma stay potent) with water then add the Lavender Essential Oil and shake. Spray your linens and delicates, then allow them to dry completely before storing.

Mattress Spray

  • 1 cup Distilled Water
  • 1 cup Distilled White Vinegar
  • 8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • 8 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Pour water and vinegar into spray bottle then add the essential oils. Shake well before each use, spray directly on your mattress and allow it to sit for an hour or two to completely dry before putting sheets back on the bed.
